If you are completely enamored with Latakia, you cannot go wrong with Pirate Kake. This blend seems to be great quality and the latakia seems to be better and smoother than i've had in the past. It's one that I keep stocked and ensure that I do not run out. I AM somewhat surprised at this ca ke's mild, lovely flavour.. If you don't like latakia, stay away from it. I can particularly taste the cavendish cut burley when I exhale through the nose. update July 2014** I decided to change the blend type of this tobacco to other primarily because I don't believe it is an English blend due to its high amount of Latakia. The smokey latakia is up front (though I wouldn't consider it a lat bomb), and floral riding shot gun and mildly sweet in the back. It is more fun to let others get a taste of something that old. The "creaminess" can be a little heavey at times so I have found this to be a good tobacco to cut with a lighter english. Three stars for PK. I've never smoked a blend with this much Latakia and would not have, had it not been given to me. I bought this because I found a 6 year old tin at a local B&M. This is my favorite tobacco. At the time i had no idea what Latakia was or why 75% matered at all. As a lover of Latakia, I had to give this a try with all the positive reviews and the high Latakia content. Few smokers will see PK as an all-day or even every-day smoke but it is what it is and if you want a latakia fix then this is nice to have on hand. I love the full-on tastiness of this tobacco Im going to bury (cellar) a ton of this treasure. Hey gang! After a few minutes, my taste buds become overwhelmed and I can't taste anything. There is this faint sense of a very dark chocolate that drifts through at times, so this stuff is not without occasional subtleties. First thing this tobacco is a fantastic smoke This is a good blend if you really want to know what "Latakia Forward" means. Pirate Kake is a pressed blend from Cornell & Diehl with mild nicotine strength, but big flavor & taste. Been a fan of this stuff for years was the other tin I picked up and opened for the road (Rattray old gowrie was the other). When I first got back into smoking pipes, a local cigar shop was getting rid of the pipe products he had - apparently not enough pipes smokers in the area. The wine helped me get through the bowl. Smokes cool and dry. This is a sit down and do nothing else but smoke tobacco. Absolute yummy. I found several blend that match my taste bud, but i keep going back to PK when i craving latakia. Yes, this blend deserves that much respect. I can taste it from time to time, not in a nutty burley taste but more of a vegetative way. Unlike Cornell and Diehls Tuggle Hall which you have to keep re-stuffing back in there. The crumble kake really helps the flavor profile and to keep the moisture higher so it doesn't dry out. Dont get me wrong, its certainly a lat bomb, and smokiness abounds, but its a soft, smooth, mild creamy smoke with a cedar like incense quality. English blends are my favorite treat. The smokiness is cool and mellow, very nice, but I failed to really see how this was a team effort. In that sense, this blend would be all-day smoke for Lataki a followers. Lighting up the bowl I was greeted by smoke rolling from the bowl and a rich, heavy, sweet smoke that I found very pleasing and that dominated this smoke. A Latakia lover's treasure. I am not quite sure how to fully describe this tobacco. Pirate Kake does have a rich smoky flavor, but it lacks the compelling subtleties of blends like Odyssey, Penzance and Lagonda. Absolutely no indication of bite even when puffing vigorously. I like this stuff, its pleasant. I can't imagine that response in the morning or afternoon. Flavorfull and satisfying. Penzance is good but it has no taste next to this. This cake should hold together nicely as it ages in the Ball jar. If you are a latakia freak, as I am, then I will venture to say you are going to like this blend a lot. The Creosote flavor is there, with a slight nutty undertone on occasion. The only downside I've found to this blend is the mouth-drying effect it has. The wife will hate it but I'm too old to care. Upon first inspection I was sure that I would need to slice this, but it falls apart rather easily. Rubbed out a bowl and packed it straight away with no drying. Opened 3 month old tin and found the dryness/wetness to be perfect. So ill be blending the reat of this kake w either the comoys or LNF as the blend was so good i was thinking about my next bowl before i was even halfway done w the first. In pipelore, this IS an "L-bomb" to be sure. This is one of my favorite blends, but it is not for a beginner or for one who is a novice smoker of English tobacco blends. It is very monotone and I don't notice the "other" oriental varieties at all. Pirate Kake is only for the true Latakia Lover, it has 70% Latakia in it , so unless your a big fan of Latakia, as I am, you may not want to buy over a sample to try. A brownie of cyprian latakia - 70% (!) Latakia forward for sure, but I absolutely love the flavors I get off of this Blend. I like them when they're blended together. I got a one ounce sample, and loved the look of it: brownie-like cake (ok, a brownie left out in the sun!) No, that isn?t a bad thing! Of all the C&D blends I have sampled, this one indubitably stands head-and-shoulders (in the crows nest, matey) above all the rest. Similar level of latakia, infinitely more fresh tasting, better overall balance, way more complex. The latakia that Craig uses does have it's own unique taste and room note for whatever reason. Closely behind the Smoke were a pleasant medium Earthy and mild woody flavors backed up by a light pleasant sweet butter, a mild spicy flavor, a light toasty and light nuttiness as well as a mildly spicy flavor. It is wonderfully and potently fragrant, it's smooth and rarely bites, and it is easy to acquire. I have done so (with some regularity, in fact) but this tames it just enough to keep it from being a full-on blowout. As you progress, the burley makes its presence felt with a note that reminds of baking bread and rounds the harsh edges of the licorice-like (in looks and taste) black weed. But what does come as a surprise, even though this packs a heady punch of smokiness, there's still a small amount of room for the nutty Burley and woody Oriental's; the Burley more-so. 4-stars. I have to admit I sort of got into the spirit of this blend and my apologies for what follows. For my purposes this is a killer wonderful rich tobacco with everything I want from a Latakia blend. It is like smoking straight Latakia, really unsmokable! Also, this is a big pipe blend, we're talking Group 6 and beyond. Very nice, i gotta get me some more of this. All in all, a different and unique pipe smoking experience; it will not be in the regular rotation, and I would not seek out again. This stuff is fantastic with a very rich latakia taste and a elegant plume of white fragrant smoke. I really don't think I will buy again as this is very one dimensional. It is top notch Cyprian leaf with solid Burley and Virginia's. This stuff produces huge, thick clouds of smoke which never dissipate. As a Latakia lover Id say this blend is heavenly. This is Latakia heaven, and it is sublime. A few lights required to get it going. The other tobaccos are added to simply smooth off the rougher edges, as opposed to smoking it straight. A few friends and I recently tried this blend. If you like well done, heavy Latakia blends, Pirate Kake fits the bill to a T. Taste is very smooth, strong and stinky. It's not so much of that "campfire" Latakia taste as it is that mossy, damp, woody, nature-like taste. This is a good tobacco. of exceptional Latakia accompanied by Turkish and Burley. First is a plum and woodsy taste, different than I thought this blend isn't aggressive, your smoke is creamy and fill your mouth. Sweet latakia smoke. It's my humble opinion that C&D has the absolute highest quality widely available Latakia on the market . Easy smoking. Smooth, spicy, with some of the thickest, whitest smoke I have seen.
